Happy Belated Birthday YouTube! It’s hard to believe the video sharing mammoth is just seven years old and I’ll be the first to put my hands up and say it completely slipped my mind until a tweet from their offical Twitter page jogged my memory. Over the course of seven years YouTube has successfully cemented itself into our everyday lives and plays a vital role in both education and leisure.

One of the first things I did after rubbing the sleep from my eyes this morning was click onto YouTube to watch a video on how to successfully poach an egg. On the way to work I checked out a trailer for the Dark Night Rises and later on I’ll probably use YouTube to play some music before deciding whether to buy a ticket for a certain festival. Like all of you YouTube is completely integrated into my life and has been for as far back as I remember. What did we actually use before YouTube? In their blog YouTube spoke about the importance of hitting the 7 year mark with a bang:

“We’ve come along way in the past 7 years. What started as a handful of videos shared among friends has transformed into a global platform delivering the next generation of channels to anyone, anywhere, and on any device. This last year was especially big for us. We helped bring more great channels to YouTube and were designed the site, making it easier for you to discover, watch and subscribe to the videos you love. And all 800 million of you all over the world have shown us we’re on the right track by increasing subscriptions 50% and watching over 3 billion hours a month.”
